Buskett Gardens was chosen as the location for our hiking activities.
This is the only forest area in Malta that has survived since the times when Malta was covered with forests.
Natural forests in Malta were cut down in the 16th–17th centuries for shipbuilding and agriculture. However, the territory of Buskett Forest was preserved by the Hospitaller Knights as a hunting reserve.
In the 16th century, Grand Master La Valette built a hunting lodge here, and his successor Verdala constructed a palace and planted a forest for noble knightly hunting. Today, this is the official summer residence of the President of Malta.
Thanks to the Maltese Knights, the forest was preserved, and local residents love it for its shady greenery, which is so wonderful for relaxing on hot days.
By the way, this hike aligns with the theme of the week dedicated to environmental conservation. The history of Buskett Forest is an excellent illustration of the results of human activity in Malta.
